"Why Is It That Fat People Are Treated Differently Than Thin People"

Weight can be a problem for most of our society.
Weight can be a problem for most of our society.

"Why Is It That Fat People Are Treated Differently; Than Thin People?

It's really sad that the people in this world think that thin is in; and fat is not. Being a fat person in this world is like being curse with a contagious disease. Fat people has been around since the beginning of time, because the bible even stated that there's nothing new under the sun, that every thing that going on now,was going on then. I've met people that was obese that complained about how people treated them, compared to some skinny or thin and in good shape. People that are over weight are constantly bullied and called names associated with animals like cows, hippos, buffaloes and anything else they can throw at them. It's sad that people with a weight problem has to deal such negative connotations from people that's smaller than they are.

Most people aren't aware that many of over weight people suffer from some form of emotional problem, like depression, and nervous or compulsive eating disorders that cause weight gain. Obese people need physical as well as mental help, because they need help with finding out what problem is and trying to fix it and start losing the excess weight and get healthier. I guess thin people are blessed to be thin; unless they have a eating disorder that cause them to have bulimia or anorexia, in this case, these disorders can sometimes be deadly if not taken care of. None of us know the pain and ridicule obese people go through by being judged because of their weight. People that has q weight problem feel like outcast or they feel that they don't belong in this world of thin minded people. Obese people have very low self esteem and self worth; they don't feel they deserve to be happy or have good things in their lives, all because of their weight problem.

Most people with weight problems, try to hide behind big clothes, so people can't see their real weight but are deceived; because big or large clothes makes them look larger. If only people would just accept these people as the human beings that they are, instead of treating them a contagious disease; it would make such a great difference in the lives of these obese people, that have a weight problem. We should try lifting them up instead of putting them down about their weight every chance we get. Obese people be they big or fat, but the truth is they have a heart and they have feelings just like we do. The best thing we can do for some one obese, is to give them encouragement and support them and treat them like normal human beings and look at them as a person and not their weight, in doing this, will help them to start feeling normal again.

Instead of judging and pointing our fingers, lets gives these people some ideas to help themselves. Our actions of help will at lease show them that we genuinely care about them as a person.

What a powerful, thought-provoking hub! It is true that many people do not see the "character" behind a person's obesity, but rather they judge them and sometimes, even bully them, which I think is very degrading to the obese person. Children who are obese are being taunted by their "peers" especially at school where they are one-third of the day and still try to focus in their schoolwork. Like you've mentioned, people should start lifting them up and helping them out rather than judging them for their obesity. In my humble opinion, I think "change" should start from the person either by consulting a dietician or a doctor, so that they can recommend what type of foods and an exercise program that will be good for them. I think this will be better than going through it all alone and trying so many "fad" diets and exercise that do not work for the individual because not all diets work for everyone-it should be catered to individual's metabolism and body structure. Thank you for sharing such a timely hub! Keep writing. God bless!

I wrote a hub about this. I always felt that being overweight was sad and i would look away, i know it's a problem that many need help with. One addiction is no worse than another, the only difference is they cannot hide it. Thank you for a thoughtful hub.

Cheers

Thank you LG for your visit and comment and what you said about the attitude is correct, but sometimes their self esteem is so low, that having a changing attitude might take a lot of doing. But I truly thank for the advice. Godspeed. creativeone59

I agree. It's too bad there is so much predjudis in this world. No two people are alike, but yet if someone is different, they aren't accepted. Predjudis people are all around, and most of them will deny it outright. It's not right. It never will be.

CO,

Thank you for addressing this topic. I've noticed that in addition to your points that sometimes a defeatist attitude is portrayed by some heavier people. I think more that the size of a person, it's their attitude toward themselves that sometimes bring ridicule.--Certainly not in all cases, but it may be something to consider.

People have stereotypical prejudices and they choose not to educate themselves beyond their small circle of reference; example is the dumb blond. Exactly what does fat mean? There’s a difference between overweight and obese. "The greatest ignorance is to reject something you know nothing about" Peace and Blessings

It's currently fashionable to be thin, but in days gone by, being heavier indicated wealth and prosperity because poor people were always on the verge of starvation. Therefore, heavier men and women were considered far more attractive than thin people.

Today, with modern farming and a plentiful food supply, poor folks can be just as heavy as rich people. I think heavy people are now viewed contemptuously as lazy gluttons by active, and very judgmental thin people.

Thoughtful Hub as always, Faye.

I agree with you 100%. We are facing an obesity epidemic like never before with focus on mainstream media. I never suffered from obesity myself, but know many people that have. I especially feel sorry for young children who are overweight and see how they are treated by their peers.

The only saving grace with all the media attention, I've noticed the overweight folks are now being provided with alternatives and tools that can help with their weight loss. I am addressing the issue through a fitness challenge and have seen people transform. With the transformation comes better health. I am thankful that I can provide people with better nutrition, especially our children, and see remarkable results. Great Hub.
